A Quater of America's Food Energy Intake is Snackfood!

via FoodBev.com RSS Feed on 6/23/11

Snacking, especially beverage consumption outside of a regular meal, continues to increase among Americans, accounting for more than 25% of calorie intake each day, according to research presented at the 2011 Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Annual Meeting & Food Expo.

Between 1977 and 2006, snacking in the American diet has grown to constitute "a full eating event," or a fourth meal, averaging about 580 calories each day, said Richard D Mattes, professor of foods and nutrition at Purdue University.

The amount of secondary eating and drinking (consumption while engaged in another activity) has also increased. Between 2006 and 2008, time spent eating primary meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner – remained consistent at 70 minutes. However, secondary eating doubled from 15 minutes each day in 2006 to nearly 30 minutes in 2008, and secondary drinking jumped nearly 90% from 45 to 85 minutes.

While snacking has increased in general, "there has been a significant increase in the amount of calories consumed through beverages," said Mattes. Today, beverages account for 50% of the calories consumed through snacking.

As many Americans do not equate beverages as readily with calorie intake, they are less likely to offset or take into account these calories, said Mattes. In general, however, snacking isn't linked with weight gain, according to G Harvey Anderson, department of nutritional sciences at the University of Toronto. "The literature doesn't support the intuitive notion that increased consumption of snack foods is an independent cause of obesity," he said. In fact, for some age groups (young children and older adults, for example) "foods consumed outside a meal are important sources of nutrients as well as energy".

To further assess the impact of snacking on the American diet and health, a definitive definition of what constitutes a snack, as well as more information on what motivates individuals to snack, is desperately needed, said Nancy Auestad of the Dairy Research Institute.

Nearly 100% of Americans in all age groups eat a snack each day, yet no standard definition exists on what constitutes a snack or what motivates individuals to snack, she said. Without a clear definition, consumers are "self-defining" snacks and snacking, "and the line between snacks and meals are blurred".

Snacking can be part of a balanced and healthy diet, said Auestad. "Good-tasting snacks that provide dietary fibre, vitamin D, calcium and potassium can help consumers meet recommended intakes."

Moderate Alcohol Intake Improves Heart Health - British Medical Journal research

Reacting to the British Medical Journal research that says individuals who drink alcohol in moderation are less likely to develop heart disease compared to non-drinkers, Chris Sorek, chief executive of Drinkaware, says:

"This isn't the first piece of research to suggest alcohol has a protective effect against heart disease, but to say that moderate drinking is good for health could be misleading for consumers as the term 'moderate' can mean different things to different people.

"The report suggests an intake of 15g of alcohol a day for a woman, equivalent to 1.88 units – a double gin and tonic – and 30g of alcohol a day for men, equivalent to 3.75 units – just over a pint and a half of 4% beer.

"To help consumers avoid the risks associated with drinking to excess, we need to help them know how many units are in their favourite drinks. Drinkaware advises people not to regularly drink more than the daily unit guidelines of 3-4 units of alcohol for men (equivalent to a pint and a half of 4% beer) and 2-3 units of alcohol for women (equivalent to a 175ml glass of wine)."

So Why Genetically Engineering Our Food?

Farmer has baboons to thank for discovery of new orange

A troop of baboons has made a farmer in the Western Cape town of Citrusdal a very happy man.

The primates discovered a brand new cultivar of citrus, sweeter than the ordinary orange.

ALG Estate’s Alwyn van der Merwe said year after year dozens of baboons gobbled up the fruit on one particular tree in the orchard.

He said, “After harvesting the rest of the orchard we put a fence around it and the next year we noticed that tree is a minimum of three weeks earlier... It was totally covered up and the internal quality was export quality."

Stranded in a Bar for Eight Days

Oh, the horror! Five employees and two patrons were stranded at Lion Inn in North Yorkshire, England due to heavy snow. The inn is also a bed-and-breakfast, equipped with plenty of food, telephone and internet service, and alcohol. Chef Daniel Butterworth told of the harrowing ordeal.

At first the staff, all aged under 25, got stuck into the drinks, he said, but on the third day they eased off.

“We haven’t been getting ratty,” he said. “It’s been fun and we have had a laugh.

“We have been getting on with little jobs, having our tea, a drink, playing games and then going to bed.

“The bosses aren’t here, they are snowed out.

“We have wireless internet here and the television works so we have been fine.”

During the day, the couple and staff managed to get out onto the snow on improvised sledges made from beer trays.

Rescue came when snowplows finally broke through and the road was officially open by Saturday night. Link -via Arbroath

3G on Mount Everest, but not in many parts of SA!

3G now available on Mount Everest

Happen to be climbing Mount Everest in the near future? Take heart -- you can probably use your iPhone there now. Provider Teliasonera has reportedly installed a 3G antenna at the base camp of Everest, connecting the remote location to a modern cell phone network for the first time. Previously, climbers had to use satellite phones to stay in touch with the rest of the world, and according to Reuters, the summit is still off limits -- the highest video call was made from an elevation of about 17,388 feet, which is where most climbers begin their journey to the summit at 29,035 feet.

Unfortunately, your iPhone will still have to be roaming -- while TeliaSonera has been running iPhone-specific services in Europe and elsewhere in the world, the iPhone hasn't officially launched in Nepal yet. Even though it'll probably cost a ton in charges, you can now call in from Mount Everest's base camp. Now about the actual climb...

RIP Paul the Oracle Octopus

RIP Paul the Oracle Octopus

Paul, the octopus who predicted the outcome of World Cup soccer matches (featured previously at Neatorama), has died at his home at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre in Germany. He was two years old.

After Germany’s semi-final defeat, Paul tipped Spain to beat the Netherlands in the final, which prompted one news agency to report he had spurred a jump in demand for Spanish government bonds. Paul’s prediction duly came to pass: Spain won.

Staff at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre in western Germany said in a statement they were “devastated” to learn of Paul’s death when they returned to work on Tuesday.

“He appears to have passed away peacefully during the night, of natural causes, and we are consoled by the knowledge that he enjoyed a good life,” said the centre’s manager Stefan Porwoll.

There was no indication that Paul had predicted his passing. Link -via Metafilter
